Shanghai Jade Buddha Temple is located at No.170 Anyuan Road, Putuo District. The Jade Buddha Temple is a Song Dynasty style palace building with a rigorous overall layout.

Jade Buddha Temple is the main teaching base of Shanghai Buddhist and one of the 142 key monasteries of Han Buddhism.


Jade Buddha Temple History

The history of Jade Buddha Temple (Yufo Si) can be traced back to the eighth year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1882).

Five Jade Buddhas were brought back from Myanmar by Master Hui Gen of Mount Putuo, and two of them were left to be worshipped in Shanghai, thus establishing the original Jade Buddha Temple.

The earliest Jade Buddha Temple (Yufo Si) was built on the side of Wusong Jiangwan Station, but it was destroyed by war and only the Jade Buddhas survived.

In 1918, it was rebuilt at its current location and named Jade Buddha Temple. And in the following decade, the construction of a group of Song style temple buildings such as Buddhist temples, pavilions, and vegetarian kitchens was gradually completed.


Jade Buddha Temple Architectural Features

The architectural style of Jade Buddha Temple reflects the characteristics of Song Dynasty architecture. The main buildings on the central axis are scattered, mostly wooden structures.

The central axis of the temple is the Tianwang Hall, the Shakya ManiHall, and the Jade Buddha Monastery. On the left and right sides, there are buildings such as the Wofo Hall, Guanyin Hall, Buddhist Copper Hall and Hall of Abstinence.

The Buddha of Maitreya is enshrined in the Tianwang Hall. In the Shakya ManiHall there are three giant Buddhas sitting on lotus seats. The Jade Buddha Monastery enshrines the 1.95-meter-high seated Buddha Shakyamuni (Akshobhya).


Relics and Artworks in Jade Buddha Temple

There are many precious cultural relics in the Jade Buddha Temple, including more than 7,000 copies of the Tripitaka, as well as various Buddha statues and Buddhist scriptures.

The wall sculptures and other works of art in the temple are exquisite, such as the Guanyin wall sculptures on the island and the Eighteen Disciples of the Buddha.
